In the last twenty-seven days, one new thing has appeared on the third shelf of Nusrat Apa's almirah — a small red heart-shaped box, sitting beside the folded sarees.
I am her younger sister, we share the same room. Every evening she opens both doors of the almirah, the naphthalene smell comes out, the katan on the hanger sways a little. She used to finish choosing a saree in two minutes. Whatever was in front, that was it.
Yesterday she pulled out the maroon katan, draped it, folded it back. Then the green cotton. Then the maroon again. Somewhere in between she reached out, lifted the lid of that red box a little, counted, and closed it again. Something has changed. What, I cannot say.
The box came from her husband — Dove Milk Chocolate 6 Pieces Heart-Shaped Gift Box. Six pieces, heart-shaped packaging, a lid on top. She said nothing to anyone that day, only put it up on the saree shelf — where she keeps her best things.
She gave me one piece that evening. The wrapper made a soft crackling sound under my fingers. It had been sitting in the shade of the almirah, so the piece was cool, and in the hand it weighs almost nothing. Held near the nose, a sweet milky smell. On the tongue it stays firm for two seconds, then you cannot find it anymore.
Four pieces are still there. She does not count them every day, but she knows how many are left. She has already decided — once it is empty, her small earrings will go into that box.
Whoever's name just came to your mind, leave a red box like this on her shelf too.
